- 16/10/2023The Role of Empathy in Philanthropy [1:04:33]142VN4-249b-2022-2023-12-19-AEmpathy has always been essential to philanthropy, but today it matters more than ever. The unprecedented intergenerational transfer of wealth, coupled with a rising tension between generations with respect to values, worldviews, and philanthropic priorities, means that family foundations and non-profit organizations need to center empathy in their work. Informed by neuroscience and positive psychology, Anita Nowak introduced her Purposeful Empathy framework as a tool to help tackle today's most pressing social and environmental challenges, and described a powerful six-step practice to become a more empathic leader. Event organized by Mc Gill Alumni Association and the Diploma of Advanced Study in Philanthropy, in collaboration with the Geneva Centre for Philanthropy and Le Cercle de la Philanthropie.
- 19/10/2023Rencontres MIA 2023-2024 | Virtual Reality as a Tool for Fundraising [52:13]97VN4-249b-2022-2023-12-07Philanthropic organisations are finding it difficult to gain the support of younger generations, which highlights the need for modern fundraising strategies. Technological advances offer a potential solution by providing alternatives to traditional fundraising practices. In an experimental study, the Behavioural Philanthropy Lab, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), investigated whether virtual reality (VR) could be harnessed to innovate fundraising. The results suggest that VR could be a viable tool for fundraising innovation and identify some of the features that could make it more effective than traditional practices.
- 23/11/2023Philanthropy Lunch | 23 November 2023 |Corporate philanthropy through... [1:31:29]287VN4-249b-2022-2023-12-07-ACorporate Philanthropy refers to initiatives a company voluntarily undertakes with the aim of producing a responsible and thus, positive impact on society. It can include ESG-sustainability driven investments, donation of products, in-kind services and technical assistance, or employee engagement programmes to advance a social or "for purpose" initiative. Often these endeavours are carried out through corporate foundations. Corporate foundations can provide an appropriate framework for structured, strategic, more independent, and long-term oriented corporate giving and help embed social purpose within an organisation, reinforcing the values of a company in the eyes of its employees, customers and partners. At the same time, corporate philanthropy can be problematic if commercial and non-profit goals are difficult to disentangle. But what does this have to do with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? How to manage divergent internal and external stakeholders’ expectations when making decisions about resource allocation? This Philanthropy Lunch provided the opportunity to deepen our understanding on the purpose of these corporate foundations as well as their governance, legal framework and general practice.
- 29/11/2023Data-driven philanthropy, hosted by Edmond de Rothschild Foundations Chair... [1:25:31]193VN4-249b-2022-2023-12-19Philanthropic behaviour, the ensemble of generous actions promoting social good, plays a critical role in providing support and resources in times of crisis. Given the complexity of the ecosystems in which philanthropic organizations operate, being as funders of projects or as beneficiaries of funds supporting their actions, it is paramount that these organizations acquire the knowledge and tools enabling them to extrapolate information from data to guide their strategies. The three-hour event Data-Driven Philanthropy, hosted by Edmond de Rothschild Foundations Chair in Behavioural Philanthropy, was divided into two parts: a seminar on data-driven philanthropy and a workshop on how to use large language models to support the philanthropic work. The aim of the seminar was to demonstrate the potential of data science for philanthropy using the case study of Swiss Solidarity donors’ data, illustrating how patterns in donor contributions can prove crucial to inform charitable organizations’ approaches to their supporters. In addition, the objective of the hands-on workshop was to understand how tools such as ChatGPT, OpenAssistant, and many others, that are entering our everyday life can be efficiently used and for which purposes. Participants learnt more about key data-science...
