The Role of Empathy in Philanthropy

Empathy has always been essential to philanthropy, but today it matters more than ever. The unprecedented intergenerational transfer of wealth, coupled with a rising tension between generations with respect to values, worldviews, and philanthropic priorities, means that family foundations and non-profit organizations need to center empathy in their work. Informed by neuroscience and positive psychology, Anita Nowak introduced her Purposeful Empathy framework as a tool to help tackle today's most pressing social and environmental challenges, and described a powerful six-step practice to become a more empathic leader.
